Katja Stolle, Exhibition Director of LASER World of PHOTONICS: Prepare to be amazed
From 22 to 25 June 2015 the international laser and photonics industry will be meeting for the industry’s flagship show in Munich. Katja Stolle is the Exhibition Director for LASER World of PHOTONICS.
1. LASER World of PHOTONICS shows the complete spectrum of photonics – but the trade show also has additional focal topics. What are they this year?
Katja Stolle: “Laser and laser systems for manufacturing” are old favorites and are also very popular with visitors to the exhibition. Another focus will be “Biophotonics & Medical Engineering” with solutions from spectroscopy and microscopy through to therapies and manipulative treatments. Imaging is a new focal topic. These days, few branches of manufacturing can do without industrial imaging, which combines a high level of quality control with the highest possible degree of efficiency.
The exhibitor portfolio also includes lasers and optoelectronics, optical information and communication, optics and production engineering for scopes, sensor technology, measuring and testing technology, and optical measurement systems.
2. Many visitors are interested in innovation. What new products in the field of photonics will we see in June?
Katja Stolle: Of course, most exhibitors keep their “secrets” under wraps until the trade show, to create a feeling of suspense. But on the whole, visitors can expect to see a number of new developments. The particular trends are in the areas of additive manufacturing, 3D X-ray microscopes and ultrashort pulse lasers. Many exciting new products and applications will be on show.
3. Trade fairs—and especially international trade fairs—are mirrors of the respective industry. How is the photonics industry faring?
Katja Stolle: The worldwide photonics market is experiencing an upswing. According to the latest issue of the “Photonics Industry Report”, after restrained development in 2012 and 2013 all the economic indicators point to long-term growth again. We also notice the trend by the increase in the number of exhibitors. To satisfy this growing demand, in 2015 we will be extending LASER World of PHOTONICS from four to five halls.
4. The World of Photonics Congress will be held parallel to LASER World of PHOTONICS. What members of the research elite can you expect to meet there?
Katja Stolle: At the congress, visitors will be able to listen to speeches by professors Theodor Hänsch, Serge Haroche, Eric Betzig and Stefan Hell, all Nobel Prize winners. Italian-American physics professor Federico Capasso will be opening the World of Photonics Congress. He is well known as one of the inventors of the quantum cascade laser. During the congress, the international science elite will be discussing the latest developments in laser and photonics research.
