Globally, more than 700,000 deaths per year are related to antibiotic resistances in infectious diseases, and the numbers are continuously rising. To provide a realistic opportunity to cope with this problem, better, faster and more reliable diagnostic tools are necessary. Furthermore, next generation technologies should also be affordable and easy to implement in routine diagnostics with a maximum of significance in results. One solution could be the linkage of visual technologies and molecular based strategies to develop diagnostic tools for the future, which means in detail the idea to detect basic resistance mechanisms from single nucleotide or amino acid mutations with optical state-of-the art applications. We will discuss tools that allow improving individual diagnostics and enable clinicians to react faster on changing conditions by personalized treatments.
